As soon as it starts to get cold here in Ontario all I want for breakfast in the morning after taking my dogs out for a short snowy walk is a big bowl of hot oats. If you were never really a fan of oats before, try these ones out I swear they are so so delicious!! I once wasn’t a fan of oats either but that was just because I didn’t know how to make them properly and wasn’t topping them with all the goodness they deserve.
In order to make these oats a balanced breakfast I like to add lots of yummy toppings. My favourite is berries, peanut butter and hemp hearts, this gives me my carbs, healthy fats and protein.
What you’ll need to make this tasty oatmeal is:
Rolled oats– the main component of this breakfast is rolled oats, I like using these because they cook up super quickly! You could also opt for steel cut oats if you have some extra time in the morning.
Oat milk– this is what makes the oats soooo luxuriously creamy. You could also use any other type of plant milk you have.
Mixed berries– I like to use the frozen mixed berries for this, they are not only cheaper but I love the juices they produce when you defrost them in the microwave, it adds the most delicious sweetness and beautiful colour to the oats. Fresh berries would be just as tasty though!
Natural peanut butter– the main event for me in this dish is the peanut butter, I adore it lol. When buying any nut butter make sure you are looking for ones that contain only the one ingredient, in this case peanuts.
Hemp hearts– this are an optional add on but I highly suggest them more for the nutritional content than the taste, they don’t taste like much! I like adding them for the extra bit of protein and healthy fats they offer.
Maple syrup– A Canadian classic of course. A spoonful of pure maple syrup drizzled on top just gives these oats the perfect amount of sweetness.
I want to dive into a bowl of these oats right now as I’m writing this lol, it sounds sooooo heavenly.

Peanut Butter Berry Oats
- 1/3 cup rolled oats
- 1 cup oat milk
- 1/2 cup mixed berries, frozen
- 1-2 teaspoons maple syrup
- Dash of cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon hemp hearts
- In a small sauce pan on medium-high heat add the oats and oat milk.
- Bring the oats to a simmer and cook for 1-2 minutes until the liquid is absorbed.
- If using frozen berries, warm in the microwave for 30 seconds until defrosted.
- Pour cooked oats into a bowl and top with the berries, maple syrup, cinnamon, hemp hearts and a dollop of peanut butter
- Serve immediately! Enjoy
